Second Shinobi War
The name the enemy gave
Hiruzen Sarutobi took three students: a girl, a quiet boy, and the loud one. When they faced Hanzō at Amegakure all three should have died; they did not. Instead of killing them Hanzō gave them a name — Sannin. Konoha's three greatest ninja took their title from an enemy's mouth, and from that day walked in three different directions.
In the marginThree names, one source: Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru come from an 1839 folktale. Kishimoto did not name them so much as lend them a name.
