Cursed laboratory

A sorcerer is measured by three things: technique, domain, reversal. Tōji has none of them. Of the seven cards below, four say "yes" and three say "no" — and on this page the real information is in the ones that say no.

   When something is given up completely, something else crosses the human limit. What Tōji gave up was cursed energy; what he received in return was a body. The bargain was struck at birth and cannot be undone.

   Present — bought

   A cursed tool carries its own curse, so using one requires no technique. That is Tōji's answer: a bought tool in place of a technique he does not have. He keeps them inside a cursed spirit and pulls them out when he needs them.

  Heavenly Restriction is a binding vow granted at birth. Sorcerers choose their vows; by the time Tōji was born, his had already been signed.

1. 禪院

   The Zen'in clan

   Born at zero

   He was born into one of the three great sorcerer clans with no cursed energy at all. By the clan's measure that was a defect, and he was treated as one. What he received in exchange, no member of the clan had: the body that Heavenly Restriction pays out.

2. 伏黒

   The name he took

   He left the clan

   He dropped the Zen'in name and took the family name of the woman he married: Fushiguro. His son Megumi was born under that name and stands in this archive under it still. It was the one irreversible good decision of Tōji's life, and even that was only a name.

3. 懐玉

   The contract

   The Star Plasma Vessel

   He took a job from the Star Religious Group: kill the Star Plasma Vessel. The target's name was Riko Amanai, and two high-school students were guarding her, Satoru Gojō and Suguru Getō. The broker who tied him to the job was Shiu Kong. The job closed — and the thing that closed it was not even a cursed tool.

4. 玉折

   The end of the fight

   He killed Gojō once

   You do not meet Limitless with cursed energy; Tōji met it with the Inverted Spear and killed Gojō once. Gojō came back, and the fight ended there. As he was dying Tōji said he had sold his son to the Zen'in clan — that sentence was what pulled Megumi out of the clan's hands years later.

5. 渋谷

   Years later

   He asked for the name

   In Shibuya his body was called back; the one calling was the side wearing Getō's body. The sorcerer who stepped in front of him was his own son. Tōji did not recognise him, fought him, then asked for his name. When he heard the answer, nobody won the fight — Tōji ended it with his own hand.
